Mika Niemelä, MD, PhD, IFAANS
Mika Niemelä, MD, PhD, IFAANS, is director of neurosurgery at Helsinki University Hospital, Europe’s largest hospital network, and professor of neurosurgery at Helsinki University. As part of his training, he finished his PhD thesis on hemangioblastomas and von Hippel-Lindau disease and spent a year at Brigham and Women’s Hospital as a visiting professor-research fellow. Dr. Niemelä’s clinical and research focus is in vascular and skull base lesions, with more than 230 scientific papers and book chapters published. He also runs a busy clinical and experimental PhD program. He is a member of five editorial boards of European and American neurosurgical journals and is the international liaison to the AANS/CNS Cerebrovascular Section and the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies’ Section of Vascular Neurosurgery. He is a past president of the Finnish Neurosurgical Society and an active member in the World Academy of Neurological Surgery and European Society of Minimally Invasive Neurological Therapy.
